Iko & J. Schmutzer, Standing Madonna with Christ Child, 1924-1925, teak, 63 x 28 x 28 cm, Missiemuseum Steyl, object number Schm05.
This Madonna stands on a double lotus cushion and carries the seated Christ Child on her right hand. Her clothing is inspired by a funerary statue of the chief consort of the first ruler of the Majapahit Empire. This must be Queen Tribhuwana, who is depicted in the temple as the goddess Parvati. The similarity lies primarily in the sarong or kain and the long train of the kebaya, as well as in the jewelry. However, Parvati’s breasts are bare, which is obviously not the case with this Madonna. The mandorla-like back of the statue from Candi Rimbi is elaborately decorated (Kinney, Klokke & Kieven, Worshipping Siva and Buddha, 216-219). The Madonna lacks ornamentation on the back. The right arm of the Christ Child is broken off. It is on loan from the Schmutzer family to the Missiemuseum Steyl.
