Iko & J. Schmutzer (design), Madonna with Christ Child, 1924-1925, teak, 94 x 54 x 54 cm, Missiemuseum Steyl, object number Schm02

Enthroned Madonna, also called a Maestà in European tradition, with the Christ Child seated on a lotus cushion on her lap. She wears a double sarong with a kawong pattern and a robe, a kemben, covered by a cloak, a kebaya (Wassing-Visser, Weefsels en Adatkostuums uit Indonesië, 55). The back of the seat is decorated with water lilies. A striking feature of the Christ Child is that he holds a small globe in his left hand and wears a priest’s cord across his chest. It is on loan from the Schmutzer family to the Mission Museum Steyl. Source: Schmutzer, Ten Berge, Maas, Europeanisme of katholicisme, 76.
