Iko & J. Schmutzer, Madonna and Child with her eyes closed (2), 1924-1925, teak, 74 x 36 x 26 cm, private collection of the Schmutzer family.
This example depicts an enthroned Madonna with a Christ Child seated on her lap. The design is similar to that of the other statues described above, but there are significant differences. The seat is different in design and is believed to be inspired by that of the Prajnaparamita from Singosari. In this example, the backrest consists of a rectangular section bordered on either side by four vertical moldings, the outer two of which are ornamented. Above these are seven horizontal moldings of varying width and thickness that support the section behind Mary’s head. The back of the seat behind Mary’s head is shaped like a lotus leaf, situated in an arc-shaped plane within which two grooves form a narrow molding, encircled by a wider molding, surrounded by another very narrow molding, and encircled by two ornamented moldings that define the form, tapering at the top and bordered by two corner ornaments to the left and right of the head. Christ and Mary are of lower quality here than in the statue at the Missiemuseum Steyl. Judging by what Jos Schmutzer writes, this is likely either the first or second attempt at this theme.
