Iko & J. Schmutzer, Madonna and Child with her eyes closed (3), 1924-1925, teak, 69 x 33 x 27, private collection of the Schmutzer family.
This example is virtually identical to the one described above, with the most striking difference being the gold-colored almond-shaped halos and ornaments of the Madonna and Christ. The use of gold in statues is also evident in the lettering of both stations carved by Iko. Such decoration on the statue suggests that it was intended as more than a model for a stone version; it may also have been an experiment. It is unknown whether Iko applied it himself, whether it was at the request of Jos Schmutzer, or perhaps even a much later addition. A key difference distinguishing this statue from the previous one is that in this version, the clerical cord does not extend over Christ’s chest.
